Dukto R5 for Symbian released

Hello, I’m writing this post to let you know that Dukto R5 for Symbian has been approved by Nokia Store QA and it’s now available on the store. This new release is now available only for Belle devices (pre-installed or upgraded). This is because the new UI is too heavy for the old Symbian 5th edition devices, and all the following (Symbian^3) devices has received the update to Sybmbian Belle. This decision helped me to concentrate on the compatibility with a single platform.

When I started working on this porting of the R5 version, I added in the roadmap some new things, but my free time is very small and also the Symbian platform is loosing market, so I preferred to drop some new things in order to have the app out and published. In this category fall a new file selecion screen (I use the native one, as R4) and the ability to select a custom picture as buddy image.

In the good news instead there is a new ads policy. Now there is only a small banner, and no other dialogs or popups like in R4.

At last, some users already pointed me out that the new release activates the GPS sensor on startup. This is because of the default settings of the ads toolkit I use for the banner. I’ve already made a change to disable it and sent it to the Nokia Store QA to approve it. I think it will take a week. You’ll get an update notification in the Nokia Store one it is availabe.

I close this post giving thanks to all the users that have shown interest in Dukto, in every way: by making a donation, by clicking on the ads in the mobile app or simply by spreading the app.

This release closes the release plan for Dukto R5, that is now available for Windows, OS X, Linux (mainly Ubuntu and Fedora based distributions) and Symbian. Also a porting for the Blackberry Playbook is available by Sacha.

Dukto R5 on Playbook!

Hello, just a quick post to point out that a Sacha, a developer with some experience on the RIM Playbook, has ported Dukto R5 to that platform. You can find it here. I don’t own a Playbook so I couldn’t try it myself, but looking at the screenshots it seems to work very well! Many thanks to Sacha!!!

Nokia store problems

Some users are pointing me out that they can’t find Dukto on the Ovi/Nokia store. I didn’t  changed anything. After a check I can confirm that Dukto is missing from the store, I’ve just contacted Nokia support to understand where the problem is. I’ll post an update here as soon as there will be some news.

Dukto R5 for OSX now available!

I’ve finally uploaded the R5 release of Dukto for OS X. I’m sorry for the delay, it took me some more time than usual because of the limited access to an OS X machine where develop and test, and also due to many other commitments, so the time I can dedicate to Dukto development is very limited. I hope this release will work well on all Intel Macintosh and all OSX versions available.

I’m working now on the Symbian version, I think that, to release it soon, I’ll cut some specific features I initially planned for the mobile version. I think it’s better than don’t release at all! :-)

So, there is the OS X version: DuktoR5-OSX.dmg

Dukto R5 final release for Windows and Linux

UPDATE: corrected donwload link for R5 portable version for Windows.

I’m happy to announce that I’ve just uploaded the last packages for the Dukto R5 final release. Following some suggestions, I’ve made some small changes since the beta release:

  • sender can now “cancel” the file transfer;
  • when a file transfer is complete, you can drag more files on the Dukto window to start a new file trasnfer to the same destination without hitting the “back” button;
  • if there is only one buddy in the buddy list, you can drag files over the Dukto window without having to select the destination buddy.

You can download Dukto R5 here:

WINDOWS INSTALLER: DuktoR5-Setup.exe

WINDOWS PORTABLE (ZIP): DuktoR5-Portable.zip

UBUNTU 11.04 PACKAGE (DEB): i386x86_64

UBUNTU 11.10 PACKAGE (DEB): i386x86_64

FEDORA 15 PACKAGE (RPM): i386x86_64

FEDORA 16 PACKAGE (RPM): i386x86_64

Also, if you are a Fedora user you can download this repository descriptor:

Fedora 15Fedora 16

Or if you are a Ubuntu user, you can add the following line to your sources.list file:

Ubuntu 11.04:
deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/colomboem/xUbuntu_11.04/ ./

Ubuntu 11.10:
deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/colomboem/xUbuntu_11.10/ ./

If you are a Dukto R5 Beta 1 user, you should get a “new update available” message soon when starting the app.

Next steps will be the porting to OS X and Symbian (the latter will require some more work).

Dukto R5 beta 1 for Linux

Finally the packages for Linux are ready for download. The target distributions are Ubuntu (and variants) 11.04 and 11.10, and Fedora 15 and 16. The reasons behind this selection are two: 1) they are the most used Linux distributions (along with their variants), and 2) I’ve experience only with these two packaging systems.

The packages are available for 32-bit ans 64-bit systems, and you can download them at the following links. I’ve also reported the links for the Windows version for convenience.

Dukto R5 beta 1 released (for Windows)

I’m happy to report that I’ve just released the first beta release of Dukto R5 for Windows. The Linux release has been posponed as the service I use to build and package Dukto is currently down for manteinance.

As I reported in my previous post introducing Dukto R5, this new release will change the main distribution model. I’m now publishing a typical Windows installer and some RPM/DEB packages for Linux. Also, a “portable” Windows version is available as a ZIP archive.

I’d like to have much downloads as possible to have feedback about this new release, mainly about bugs and compatibility problems.

You can contact me, as always, at the following address:

e-mail address

Please add the “[BETA]” tag in the subject so I can understand you are talking about this beta release.

Before starting, I have to say that if you don’t like this new Dukto interfaces, you can always keep using the R4 which is completely protocol-compatible with this new one.

Hear and Write for 5th edition

Just a quick post to point out that Hear and Write is now available on the store for Nokia Symbian 5th edition devices. As I couldn’t make in depth testing on these devices, can some of you can try it and report me if it’s all ok? Just for precision, it requires a network connection!
