Dukto R6

UPDATE: this project is no longer maintained. You can download it and use it if it works on your devices, but I can’t provide any update and support anymore. I won’t provide also any security or bugfix update.

Dukto is one of my long-lived software project, it’s now at the 6th release, with many improvements over the previous versions. One of the main changes of this release is the new user interface inspired to the Metro style UI developed by Microsoft for the new releases of Windows Phone, Windows, Xbox and all the other Microsoft products. Since I like the simplicity, the essentiality of this kind of UI, I’ve decided to make a new Dukto interface for all the supported platforms.

If you don’t know Dukto, I can tell you that it’s an easy file transfer tool designed for LAN use. I use it in my everyday work to transfer files from one PC (or other device) to another, without worrying about users, permissions, operating systems, protocols, clients, servers and so on… Just start Dukto on the two PCs and transfer files and folders by dragging onto its window. That’s all.

Dukto main features are:

  • Simple user interface
  • No server or internet connection needed
  • Zero configuration
  • Clients auto-discovery
  • High speed file transfer
  • Multi-OS native support
  • Portable version available
  • Multi files and folders transfer
  • Transfers log
  • Send and receive text snippets (eg. useful for sending URLs)
  • Open received files directly from the application
  • Windows 7 taskbar integration with progress and transfer indicator
  • Show your IP addresses on the IP connection page
  • Full Unicode support
  • Metro style UI
  • Free and open source

Dukto is a free open source project, licensed under GPL. Official releases are made by me for the following platforms:

  • Windows (XP or later)
  • OS X (10.6.x or later)
  • Linux (packaged for Ubuntu and Fedora)
  • Symbian (for Nokia touch phones)

Also there are porting made by other developers, like the following:

You can find the source code on the project page http://sourceforge.net/projects/dukto/ at SourceForge.net. Dukto has also been tested and certified by Softpedia, Brothersoft and GearDownload.

  2. Nice Job with Dukto. It’s a great tool and I have installed it on all my devices (BlackBerry Z30, S5 w/ Android, Windows, Linux, Mac OSX). But I missed a context menu entry on “Share”.

But I have to say Thank You, It’s a great tool. I’m talk about it with my friends!

  3. Feature request again,

The ability to share files/folders/messages to everyone on the local network, without sending to each one by one would be useful. E.g. I teach in a small computer lab and sometimes I need to share the same file with all my students: such feature would be really handy.

  4. @Carl no, at least right now. I don’t even know if it is technically possible…

  5. Sarebbe interessante poter avere una notifica all’arrivo di un messaggio o file.

  6. Awesome little tool here. I’ve used other LAN file transfer programs, but this one takes the cake for ease-of-use and design. It seems like most utilities like this one, developers get the functionality down and don’t take much time or effort with the design. Completely understand that, as that is often what I do when coding something to suit my personal workflow, but it’s nice to come across one like Dukto that just so happens to be sleek as well. :) I’ll try to donate when I can.

  7. hello,

you have realy created a great app.but as I’m using blackberry 10 device, dukto wroks fine for phone to phone, yesterday i noticed.

my blackberry dukto is unable to communicated with my laptop’s windows 10Pro x64.
means I can send from my phone to laptop but
CAN’T SEND FROM LAPTOP TO PHONE.

    already checked firewall settings etc.

    Thnx plz revert.

  8. Hello! I want to port dukto to e-ink readers like kobo touch.
To avoid annoying blinking on e-ink screen, all animations needed to be disabled.
    Any way to do that?

  9. When I set received file folder to external SD card, Dukto will results in error if I try to receive files.
    Is this normal?

  10. Is there a way to make Dukto save file to external SD card?
I always get an error whenever I try to sent files to SDCARD1.

I’m on lollipop and all other apps can write to external SD card.

  11. Sorry for posting several times, but I already solved my problem.
Turn out, Dukto does not support Lollipop’s write access to external SD card.
Dukto should have ask for write access permission in Lollipop, but it does not.
So, I had to change permission (WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) in platform.xml to enable Dukto to write to external SD card.

I notice that Dukto hasn’t been updated for almost a year. I hope the author is not abandon it.
This app is great; it’s transfer files faster than competitors, UI is clean and very easy to setup.
All it need is just a little update to take full advantages of Lollipop.

  12. @Marcus thanks for your feedback. Currently I’m not working on Dukto, I hope to have some time to work on it in the coming months or to find someone interested in developing a complete Android version.

  13. Thanks for this prog. I like it very much. But it would be very nice if there was a popup message asking to accept an incoming file instead of just downloading it straight.

  14. Great work, Emanuele: you made a wonderful program! Thanks so much!

I just had some minor trouble after ugrading win 7 to win 10 home, but it seems that “error code 7” that sometimes appear while sending data from Windows 10 Home to Windows Phone 8.1 using portable version of Dukto R6 can be avoided just enabling “compatibiliy mode” = “windows 7” for dukto.exe.

Anyway, the new Dukto App available in Windows Store works perfectly in windows 10.

  15. Love this tool but I can’t seem to find Dukto on the list when trying to “Share” Pictures/Videos from the Android Gallery App.. Any fix for this?

  16. Hello! This piece of software is incredible! I use it on Debian, Android and Windows. There is only one missing feature for me. It would be really fine if there is an option at the settings for “disable auto accepting” at receiving files/folders. A option like “User accepting for receiving files/folder necessary” would be fine. For Default this option maybe is not enabled –> Dukto is as simple as now. But if a user want to activate it (because he/she is in a company LAN and don’t want that anybody of this company which is using Dukto can store a file per Dukto on his/her PC without a chance to refuse the storing) he/she can accept or refuse a file/folder transfer.

  17. Sorry but I have to “update” my last comment… Neither Dukto App from MS Store nor dukto R6 portable work fine any more in my win 10 pcs… Is anyboby having same troubles during the last week? Maybe it’s due to latest win 10 updates?
Dukto PC Apps installed in my 2 PC find my Windows Phone but neither Windows Phone finds any PC, nor Desktop and Notebook find each other… Any suggestion? Thanks for your attention

  18. Hi,

thanks for the nice tool. I checked it out with android 5.0.2 and Linux Mint 17.2. All works fine and nothing is so easy to use as this cool stuff.
I wa searching for an alternative for airdrop in case of using linux/windows and android.
Filedrop was my first choice until i found out, that filedrop doesn’t support linux.
Therefore i was really happy, as i found dukto. Was simply searching for “filedrop alternative linux”.
At first point was the wabpage alternativeto.net and here we are.

When you have time i would suggest to provide some little features:
    Linux: minimize to tray
    Android: send/receive contact(s)

    Have a nice day!

    BR

  19. Saludos, le herramienta está genial Pero podrías añadir la opción de mostrar mis duktos( las pc, con ip) para no tener que escribir a cada momento las ip. Gracias y muy útil. Excelente.

  20. Thank you for such a nice application. Actually, I have a suggestion. Something like remembering previously connected IP or computer would be great.

  21. bonjour
très bon soft qu j’utilise;un grand merçi pour vôtre travail

    très cool

  22. please update dukto for support middle east languages (persian – arabic – urdu) for the name of transfered files

    please

  23. Looks like a great program! Is there a command line interface so that it can be run from scripts/batch files?

  24. Just downloaded and installed R6 to my desktop running Windows and my tablet running Android 4.2
Is there any way to specify a folder on the external sd card of the tablet as the destination for transfers? When I try change the destination entering setup in Dukto on the tablet, the top-level of the system files are all reported to be “read-only” so that I can’t out of the internal memory of the tablet to specify the external sd card.

  25. I Like your app – I use it for tranfer between 2 android lollipop devices. I have one small problem if the screen goes black during a file transfer on either side the transfer stops until the screen wakes again.
